Centrelink Loan FAQs
What are Centrelink loans?
Centrelink loans are personal loans available to people who receive Centrelink payments as part (or all) of their income. At Cash Train, we consider Centrelink benefits when assessing affordability, meaning you may still qualify for a loan even if some or all of your income comes from government support. Our cash loans range from $200 to $2,000, while our larger personal loans may go up to $4,600.
Loan amounts will depend on your need, plus a review of how affordable the repayments would be for you. As a responsible lender, we need to make sure that the loan is affordable for you and that you can repay the loan, comfortably.
What could I use my loan for?
A Cash Train loan can help cover a wide range of unexpected or essential expenses when you need extra funds. Some common reasons customers use their loans include:
Emergency expenses:
Urgent car repairs (e.g., fixing a broken transmission, replacing tires)
Medical or dental bills (e.g., check-ups, unexpected procedures, prescriptions)
Vet bills for pets
Household and personal needs:
Essential home repairs (e.g., fixing a leaking roof, replacing a broken appliance)
Moving costs (e.g., rental bond, removals, temporary accommodation)
School-related expenses (e.g., uniforms, laptops, excursions)
Travel for urgent family matters (e.g., funerals, medical emergencies)
Unexpected financial shortfalls:
Covering temporary cash flow gaps due to delayed income
Emergency travel or accommodation costs
Please Note:
As part of our responsible lending commitments, we cannot offer loans to fund gambling or any purpose deemed irresponsible under responsible lending guidelines.

What documents will I need to provide?
To apply for a Cash Train loan, you’ll need:
- Your bank account details
- 90 days of recent bank statements (retrieved securely during application)
- A valid phone number and email address
- Proof of regular income (your Centrelink benefits count)
If applying in branch, you will also need:
- A valid form of ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport)
Will my Centrelink payments be enough to qualify for a loan?
You could qualify for a loan with us, if your Centrelink payments are stable and meet our lending criteria.
When assessing your application, we consider:
- Your total income, including Centrelink benefits
- Your regular expenses and ability to make repayments comfortably
- The type of Centrelink benefits you receive
Some benefits may be more acceptable than others, and approval depends on whether the loan is affordable based on your overall financial situation. If Centrelink is your only income source, you may still be eligible.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, our team is happy to review your situation and provide guidance.
Can I apply for a loan if Centrelink is my only source of income?
Yes, you could, but it depends on which Centrelink benefits you receive.
Commonly accepted benefits:
- Age Pension
- Disability Support Pension (DSP)
- Family Tax Benefits (FTB)
- Carer’s Allowance
- JobSeeker (Newstart)
Other benefits:
- Youth Allowance
- Austudy/Abstudy
If Centrelink is your only source of income, you could still get your loan approved with us.
Will applying for a loan affect my benefit payments?
No, applying for a loan with Cash Train does not affect your Centrelink benefits.
However, it’s important to only borrow what you can comfortably afford to repay.
Are pensioners eligible for Centrelink loans?
Yes! If you receive the Age Pension or Disability Support Pension (DSP), you may be eligible for a pensioner loan, provided you meet our lending criteria.
We consider pensioners for both small cash loans ($200 - $2,000) and personal loans ($2,001 - $4,600), depending on affordability.
Can you get a loan on Centrelink?
Cash Train’s primary requirement for a cash loan is proof of income – which includes regular Government benefits like Centrelink payments or the age pension. While this must be confirmed by a Centrelink income statement, Cash Train has helped many people on Centrelink secure a cash loan.
Can I get approved even with bad credit?
Yes, it is possible! Cash Train considers applicants with bad credit, as long as you meet our criteria and can afford the repayments.
Unlike traditional banks, we focus on your current financial situation rather than past credit issues. If you have stable income and meet our affordability checks, you may still be approved - even with a history of defaults or missed payments.
See our bad credit loans for more details and to apply.

Example loan costs
EXAMPLE: Our Cash Loans incur a 20% Establishment Fee and a 4% monthly fee, based on the amount borrowed. For example, a small loan of $1,000 over 3 months has fees and charges totalling $320 (1 x $200 + 3 x $40), resulting in a total repayment of $1,320. The minimum loan term is 2 months and a maximum of 12 months. An APR (Annual Percentage Rate) does not apply to Cash Loans.
WARNING: This comparison rate applies only to the example or examples given. Different amounts and terms will result in different comparison rates. Costs such as redraw fees or early repayment fees, and cost savings such as fee waivers, are not included in the comparison rate but may influence the cost of the loan.
